What We Offer

RAISING ATTAINMENT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Leadership Partner: support/training/coaching/mentoring

Good leadership and management is the most critical aspect of successful schools.  New head teachers benefit from support and coaching in the early days.  More experienced head teachers can find the position rewarding but also it can be lonely and challenging.  AMS has the staff who have the first hand experience of headship and leadership at all levels in a school community.  We can offer personalised support or more generic training depending on the needs of the school.  Areas covered can include: workforce structure, managing organisational change, including recruitment, middle management, including subject leadership, performance management and the role of the team leader to name but a few.  AMS can help your school to identify the support and training it might require in this area and then personalise it to address those specific needs.

School Self-Evaluation/Review

The key professional task of school leaders is to monitor (review) and evaluate the school overall so as to be able to answer the questions: Are we making a difference….and a sufficient difference?  If so, how?  If not, why not?  What action are we taking?  Is it being effective?  Advisory Management Services (AMS) can work with your school on this by working as a critical friend.  It can also provide structures and systems to help you improve your school self-evaluation and understand the theory and research behind effective leadership and management.  AMS can train and work with leaders at all levels in the school, including governors, senior managers and middle leaders.

Data analysis

Analysing and interpreting data is more important than ever before.  Do all staff understand how Raiseonline and Fischer Family Trust information along with in-house tracking systems work or could be improved?  Are staff sufficiently competent with this to allow it to inform practice and provide convincing evidence linked to actions?  AMS can train school staff on the use and analysis of data and act as an objective sounding board to confirm strengths and aspects for improvement.

School development planning

Do you have a clear and manageable development plan showing how you are going to make improvements with clear links to the budget?  AMS is in the position to be able to critique your planning and provide structures and ideas around how these can be improved, along with any training that may be needed to ensure all staff are able to contribute to and work within the plan.

Values vision and aims for your school

Successful schools have shared identified values and beliefs.  These are translated into the aims of your school and underpin all of your actions for improvement.  AMS is able to work with you and your school community on indentifying the values and beliefs and how they can be use to drive improvement forward.  This can be through training, mentoring or coaching.

Governor training

Effective governors are in a position to be able to answer these questions about their school:  Are we making a difference….and a sufficient difference?  If so, how?  If not, why not?  What action are we taking?  Is it being effective?  To be in a position to do this governors need to be fully involved in developing the vision, aims and beliefs of the school, ensure the school fulfils its statutory duties, able to interrogate pupil tracking data, be aware of how the school can benefit from working with others and enable the school to achieve best value for money.  AMS has experience of working with governors through all of these issues successfully.  Successful workshops have included, 'The Role of the Critical Friend' and 'Using data to drive school improvement,' including work with Raiseonline and Fischer Family Trust.  AMS can also offer support to those governors undertaking the performance management of the head teacher.

Teaching and learning

What takes place at the 'chalk face' is the real test that is more than met by successful schools.  Does the school have a robust programme of lesson observations taking place?  Are all teachers, support staff and young people clear about assessment strategies?  Do teaching staff use this effectively to inform planning and their next lessons?  How is behaviour managed?  Do staff know which aspects of their teaching could be improved?  AMS has the skills and expertise to work with leaders and school staff on how to improve teaching and learning across the school.  Joint lesson observation reviews can be undertaken, which not only provides an over view of practice across the school but improves the monitoring skills of staff.  Training, in specific areas can also be undertaken, e.g. assessment for learning, behaviour management, active learning, curriculum planning etc.

Lesson observations

What takes place at the 'chalk face' is the real test that is more than met by successful schools.  Does the school have a robust programme of lesson observations taking place?   Do staff have the skills to peer mentor in this area?  Are they clear on what makes and outstanding lesson?'  AMS has the skills and expertise to work with leaders and school staff on how to improve teaching and learning across the school.  Joint lesson observation reviews can be undertaken, which not only provides an over view of practice across the school but improves the monitoring skills of staff.  Training, in specific areas can also be undertaken, e.g. assessment for learning, behaviour management, active learning, differentiation, use of resources etc.

Performance management (including for head teachers)

Performance management is one of the key tools that successful schools use to drive improvement and raise attainment.  When used correctly it can ensure that the whole school community is working towards the same outcomes.  AMS can work with you at all levels of this process, whether it is with governors undertaking the head teacher performance management, team leaders undertaking the performance management of staff and those staff being performance managed.

Project management

Do you have a specific project that needs to be managed?  Maybe capacity is too thin or staff expertise is not quite ready to tackle it?  AMS has the skills and knowledge to work with you in most areas of project management in schools.  Not only can the work be achieved successfully and efficiently but other staff can be coached to improve their practice and increase capacity at the school.

Using Mindset to improve pupil achievement

Every so often a groundbreaking idea comes along. This is one. Mindset explains:

" Why brains and talent do not automatically bring success

" How they can stand in the way of it

" Why praising brains and talent does not foster self-esteem and accomplishment, but jeopardizes them

" How teaching a simple idea about the brain raises achievement

Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success-a simple idea that makes all the difference.  In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success-without effort. They are wrong.  In a growth mind set, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.

AMS has undertaken research in this area and developed staff training and pupil workshops to help improve attainment and progress in learning for young people.

NQT (newly qualified teacher) Induction

NQTs need to continue to show that they are meeting QTS (qualified teacher status) and meeting the Induction Standards for their first year of teaching.  Does your school have the staff capacity and knowledge to act as an induction tutor for an NQT?  AMS can help by working with your NQT and training and coaching your identified induction tutor.  Our adviser has experience of working with NQTs at school and local authority level.

Consultant headship

Do you have a new head teacher who would benefit from a working partnership with an experienced head teacher?  Is your school moving through a difficult time when an objective external view would help to move things forward more quickly and effectively?  How will your school operate in a world where greater accountability will sit alongside greater autonomy? How do you view an educational landscape with no National Strategy and a super slim Local Authority? Excited? Daunted?

What are your thoughts on:

" Your capacity to lead an autonomous school?

" Where your support and challenge come from?

" Who you talk to if you get stuck?

" How you renew, refresh and sustain your own leadership?

" How you refill your "reservoir of hope"?

Working with AMS can make an important contribution to your response to these questions, your leadership and the direction in which your school might travel at this time of political and educational change.
