What We Offer

IMPROVING WELLBEING IN THE EDUCATION COMMUNITY

Wellbeing school review

Are you fulfilling your statutory 'Wellbeing' duty of care set out in the Children's Act 2006?  Undertaking a wellbeing review will enable your school to be fully aware of the strengths and areas to improve in this area.  AMS has the skills and expertise developed over a number of years to be able to work with you effectively on this task.

If you think we could help, please contact us for an informal discussion.

PSHEE/Citizenship subject reviews

PSHEE (personal, social, health and economic education) covers the knowledge skills and understanding around SRE (sex and relationship education), drugs education and safety.  PSHEE and Citizenship together provide our young people with the life skills for their futures and enable them to make the most of their learning opportunities.  Undertaking subject reviews will enable your school to identify areas for improvement.  By working with an AMS Adviser your members of staff will not only be more aware of the 'health' of their subject but also gain professional experience and expertise in middle leadership.

If you think we could help, please contact us for an informal discussion.

PSHEE/Citizenship subject leader coaching

There are many aspects of the role of subject leader that are generic.  By working in partnership with your subject leader in PSHEE/Citizenship AMS will be improving their professional skills and ensuring improvement in learning opportunities for young people at the same time.  Research shows that people can often learn more effectively in a coaching approach than from face-to-face training.  'Coaching is most effective when a staff member with a clearly identified need is paired with a colleague who has acknowledged expertise in that area.'  (Continuing Professional guidance, TDA, 2006)

PSHEE/Citizenship curriculum planning

PSHEE (personal, social, health and economic education) covers the knowledge skills and understanding around SRE (sex and relationship education), drugs education and safety.  PSHEE and Citizenship together provide our young people with the life skills for their futures and enable them to make the most of their learning opportunities.  Planning is the core of provision in these subjects.  AMS has experience at national and local level with developing schemes of work to match the needs of young people, especially in these more sensitive areas and can offer training and support in whichever form best suits the needs of your school.

Assessment, recording and reporting in PSHEE/Citizenship

Assessment in PSHEE/Citizenship is no different to any other subject.  It should:

" Inform the learning process through identifying need (assessment for learning).

" Complete the learning cycle effectively by providing opportunities to reflect upon what has been learnt and how it can be put into action, thus having the potential to affect behaviour (assessment for learning)

" Collect information to certify achievement and competence, and to inform others (assessment of learning)

AMS has worked at national and local levels on improving assessment in these areas and can offer training and support in whichever form best suits the needs of your school.

Teaching and learning in PSHEE/Citizenship

What takes place at the 'chalk face' is the real test that is more than met by successful schools.  Does the school have a robust programme of lesson observations taking place?  Are all teachers, support staff and young people clear about assessment strategies?  Do teaching staff use this effectively to inform planning and their next lessons?  How is behaviour managed?  Do staff know which aspects of their PSHEE/Citizenship teaching could be improved?  AMS has the skills and expertise to work with leaders and school staff on how to improve teaching and learning across the school.  Joint lesson observation reviews can be undertaken, which not only provides an over view of practice across the school but improves the monitoring skills of staff.  Training, in specific areas can also be undertaken, e.g. assessment for learning, SRE (sex and relationship education), active learning, curriculum planning etc.

SEAL (social and emotional aspects of learning)

Social, emotional and behavioural skills underlie almost every aspect of school, home and community life, including effective learning and getting on with other people. They are fundamental to school improvement.  Where children have good skills in these areas, and are educated within an environment supportive to emotional

health and wellbeing, they will be motivated to, and equipped to become successful and resilient learners who will become happy and active citizens of the future.  AMS is skilled in the use of these resources and ways of working both in the classroom and beyond, including work with parents.

Pupil voice/consultations

Giving children and young people a voice means making it part of everyday school practice for them to have a meaningful say in what happens within the school and a real

opportunity to take part.  When developing mechanisms for hearing and acting on what children and young people say it is important to find out what they all think and not only those who regularly contribute and are most vocal. Schools should consider a range of creative listening systems. Teachers should be consulting with children and young people to help them find ways of improving learning and teaching. This will enhance the participation of children and young people in their own learning as well as in other areas of school life.  AMS has the skills to be able to work with your staff to make listening to young people a reality in practice.

Governor training and parental workshops

Effective governors are in a position to be able to answer these questions about their school and areas of responsibility, including wellbeing:  Are we making a difference….and a sufficient difference?  If so, how?  If not, why not?  What action are we taking?  Is it being effective?  AMS has experience of working with governors and parents through all of the sensitive issues that can arise in the life skills arena.  It is vital that parents and carers are clear about what is being taught to their children in life skills as in all other subjects. Successful workshops have included, 'Using Wellbeing to Raise Achievement' and SRE and drugs education workshops.

Project management

Do you have a specific wellbeing project that needs to be managed?  Maybe capacity is too thin or staff expertise is not quite ready to tackle it?  AMS has the skills and knowledge to work with you in most areas of project management in schools.  Not only can the work be achieved successfully and efficiently but other staff can be coached to improve their practice and increase capacity at the school.
